Different Types of Fire Alarm Systems and Their Detectors

How do Fire Detectors and Alarm Systems work?

Fire alarm services save our buildings from life-changing damage. So, what are these fire alarms? And how do they work?

In layman’s terms, detecting a fire and sending alert signals to convey the message within a premise is a fire alarm system’s work.

The mechanism detects smoke, heat, or other signs of fire using a sensor. This detection is conveyed via a signal to the fire alarm panel.

Upon receiving a signal, the panel sends the message all over. This alerts residents and gives them the provision to evacuate immediately.

Types of Fire Alarm Systems and Types of Detectors

Let’s learn about the different types of fire alarms.

Fire Alarm Type Key Feature
Manual Fire Alarm System Handled manually at pull stations.
Automated Fire Alarm System Triggered by fire/ smoke/heat sensors.

Now that you have a basic idea of the fire alarm systems, let’s look at the different types of detectors.

Detector Description Purpose Cost
Ionization Type Smoke Detector Detects smoke when the electric current flow is disrupted.  Fast-burning Fires  $10-25
Photoelectric Smoke Detector Uses a laser beam that is disrupted by smoke. Smaller Fires  $3080
Heat Detector Examines air temperature because of flames. Mostly used in large warehouses to avoid false alarms.  $30-50
Combined Ionization and Photoelectric Uses both current and laser beam. It’s the fastest of all.  Best for commercial and residential spaces.  $20-40
Carbon Monoxide Smoke Detectors Inspects high levels of CO and sends signals.  Small residential spaces. $20

Once the basic differences between the two alarm systems are understood, dig in a little deeper. It’ll help you find your best fit.

Alarm Systems: Which Suits Your Space?

There’s one fire alarm that’s been tailor-made for your workspace. Before you find out which fits your demand, there’s one thing we need you to know.

Different factors influence the pricing of an alarm system. It’s important to keep these in mind before opting for one. Here’s a list:

  • Size of the premises.
  • The type of mechanism.
  • Quantity (which will include sensors, smoke detectors, etc.)
  • Installation charges.
  • Building infrastructure (Intricate cable systems increase labour cost).

Now, with that out of the way, let’s look at the functions of these different types of fire alarms.

Alarm Panel System Qualities Ideal Fit  Price
Conventional Fire Alarm System  4-wire System.  The central panel controls multiple detectors.  The central panel sends signals.  However, it cannot locate the precise detector. This requires manual intervention.  Large and Complicated Structures Shops, Restaurants  Roughly $3000-5000
Analogue Addressable Fire Alarm System Includes features that monitor device health, type, location.  It can also read smoke density, change in water pressure and heat intensitySchools, Hospitals, Airports Approx. $10,000-15,000.
Two-wire Fire Alarm System Similar to the conventional system.  It allows detector recognition.  Smaller premises $700-1000
Wireless Fire Alarm System  No cables. Multi-frequency links send detection signals.  More expensive than the rest.  Properties and spaces that don’t permit wiring.  Estimated between $20-40,000.
Hybrid Fire Alarm System Both wireless and wired functions. Thus, there is an in-built backup.  24*7 functioning premises. Above $50,000.

There’s nothing more that you need to know about alarms now.

But before, it’s also important to know how to take care of one. At least, to avoid added expenses.

So, here are some tips

  • Fix a regular cleaning routine.
  • Frequency of alarm system tests should be regular. This should include call points to detectors.
  • Check the battery status. If the light signals are low, it’s time to get new batteries.
  • Troubleshoot minor issues immediately.

The Final Word

While it may be easier to manage a wireless fire alarm system, it may not fit your budget.

There are other aspects that you may need to keep in mind. For example, alarms that fit your home shouldn’t be installed at offices and vice-versa.

It’s crucial you keep in mind all aspects while looking for a new alarm system.

To help you through that, this blog will always be here for you.
